News from English Speakers

Gimmel students are beginning readers.  They work on letters, sounds and phonics to “explode the code”.  They have begun to read easy chapter books.

Upper grade English speakers' classes are literature based, so the majority of the lessons are centered on novels, short stories, essays and poems:

Fourth graders read works by authors Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl,  Katherine Paterson. Jill Murphy, and Ellen Conford.  Fifth graders concentrated on biographies and met Mark Twain, Ilan Ramon, Helen Keller, Anne Frank and then chose a hero or heroine of their own to research.  Sixth graders were introduced to poetry by reading “Love That Dog” by Sharon Creech and discovered many styles: limericks, Shakespearean sonnets, narrative poems and nonsense rhymes.  While reading Greek myths they composed their own, offering explanations for lightening, make-up and more.  Bread, the staff  of life, was also a staple of the citizens of  our young state,  After reading about the hardships of bringing flour to Jerusalem during the war in 1948, sixth graders kneaded their own dough and brought it home to bake, incorporating reading and experience.
